Low Sperm Count

Overview

Low sperm count (oligospermia) means the concentration of sperm in the ejaculate is below the normal reference range. It's one of several possible factors behind a couple's difficulty conceiving, and is often treatable once the underlying cause is identified.

Symptoms

Usually no noticeable physical symptoms
Difficulty conceiving with a partner
Reduced libido if linked to a hormonal cause
Testicular swelling or discomfort if an underlying cause like varicocele is present

Causes

A varicocele, hormonal imbalance, lifestyle factors like smoking, excess alcohol and heat exposure, prior infections, and genetic factors can all reduce sperm count.

Risk Factors

VaricoceleOne of the most common correctable causes of low sperm count.
ObesityAssociated with lower sperm counts and hormonal changes.
SmokingDirectly reduces sperm quality and count.
Chronic heat exposureProlonged hot baths, saunas or occupational heat can impair sperm production.

Diagnosis

A semen analysis is the primary test, often combined with a hormone panel and physical exam to identify a correctable underlying cause.

Complications If Untreated

Left unaddressed, an underlying cause like varicocele can progressively worsen sperm parameters over time.

Treatment Options

Prevention Tips

Avoiding prolonged heat exposure, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol all support healthy sperm production.

Lifestyle Advice

Maintaining a healthy weight, reducing alcohol and smoking, and avoiding tight underwear or prolonged laptop use on the lap can meaningfully support sperm parameters.
