Hypospadias

Overview

Hypospadias is a congenital condition in which the urethral opening is located on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip. It's present from birth and is usually noticed during the newborn examination.

Symptoms

●Urethral opening not located at the tip of the penis

●Downward curve of the penis during erection, noticed later in life

●Abnormal spraying of the urine stream

●A hooded appearance of the foreskin

Causes

Hypospadias results from incomplete development of the urethra during fetal growth, influenced by genetic and hormonal factors.

Risk Factors

Family history — A father or sibling with hypospadias raises the likelihood.

Certain genetic conditions — Associated with a higher incidence of hypospadias.

Low birth weight — Linked to a higher risk.

Premature birth — Associated with increased incidence.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made on physical examination at birth or in early infancy; mild cases usually need no additional imaging.

Complications If Untreated

Left uncorrected, hypospadias can cause difficulty with urination or fertility later in life, and may have a psychological impact if not corrected before school age.
